CHAPTER TWENTY

PICKING THE BONES

“I swear to you, this is no joke. I’m not making this up.” I reached across the table and gently stroked the back of Gina’s free hand, as she lifted the last piece of filet off her plate with her fork and placed it in her mouth.

I had been unsuccessfully trying to convince her since she returned home late that afternoon that what I said was gospel. I think it might have freaked her out to see her husband acting so strangely, and I’m sure the nurse in her was wondering if I was having a mini stroke that was impacting my mental capacity. But I kept at it little by little while I helped her prep the dinner and continued through the meal itself. Gina in turn, did her best to ignore me, until now.

“Let me get this straight,” she finally said after swallowing, while waving her fork around for effect, “you’re honestly telling me that—no bullshit—this horse—”

“This mule,” I corrected her for the umpteenth time.

“—this mule,” she repeated, “not only thanked you for helping her get free of the fence, but she actually called you by your first name?”

I nodded.

“And now this psychic, this Bobbi-person, is telling you that your dead brothers want you to buy this mule?” She stood up from the table to clear her dish.

“In a nutshell,” I said, trying to look as sane as possible while rotating in my seat to follow her path to the kitchen sink.

She stood quietly while she rinsed her plate and placed it in the dishwasher, then returned to the table, sat down, and gathered her thoughts for a moment.

“Okay,” she finally said, looking me in the eyes. “I gotta tell you that this whole thing sounds fucking insane.”

Fearing the worst, I buried my face into my hands, my elbows propped up on the table, as if awaiting a final blow.

“But, in forty years, you have never lied to me, even about your work,” she continued, “so if you’re telling me this mule can talk, then as crazy as that sounds, I believe you. Of course, you should buy her.”

I’m sure I looked as shocked as I felt. I stood up, reached across the table, lifted Gina to her feet and gave her a passionate kiss. I realized at that moment that as long as she believed in me, I didn’t care if I was crazy or not.

“In for a dime, in for a dollar,” she said, smiling, “so how are you going to buy this mule?”

Up until that moment, I had been too distracted by the insanity of the event itself to even consider how I would pull that off. I knew I had enough fenced in property for the mule, given that most of my neighbors kept three or four horses on the same amount of land. I also had the little barn in the side paddock, which, with a little TLC could serve as a nice enough place to house it.
